Reasons for learning

Training product entry requirements

Entry to this qualification is open to individuals who:

  • hold a CHC30121 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care or
  • CHC30113 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care.

RTO entry requirements

For entry, students must show evidence that they have a Registered Working with Vulnerable People Card (RWVP) or a receipt that the student has applied for a RWVP card.

This is a requirement of the National Quality Framework Regulations for Early Education environments (if a receipt is used as evidence the card must be shown as evidence prior to starting the course).

Licensing, legislative or regulatory requirements:

No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

Language, literacy and numeracy requirements:

Learners are required to undertake the Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment ensure learner can work at Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) level 3 or higher.

Mandatory work placement requirement

To achieve this qualification, the individual must have completed a total of at least 280 hours of work placement in a regulated children’s education and care service in Australia as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency. The total number of hours may be applied collectively across all units of competency that include the requirement for workplace hours.

Training Modes

We offer a diverse range of training modes to suit different learning styles and preferences. These include online learning, work placement opportunities, interactive playgroups, and more.

However, it’s important to note that our courses are structured as a combination of these modes, rather than offering each mode separately. This holistic approach ensures that students benefit from a comprehensive learning experience that encompasses theoretical knowledge, practical application, and real-world skills development.

By integrating various modes of training, we aim to provide a well-rounded educational journey that prepares our students for success in their chosen field.

Mode 1: Combined (Online Classes + In-person)

Online Classes

This is an online session where the trainer uses a Google Slides presentation and groupwork activities to support and extend on the theory provided to students through the Unit Learning Guide. All these resources are provided on the online Learning Management System (LMS).

Monday, Tuesday and Thursday

2:00pm – 6:00pm

During school terms only – Refer to timetable provided by your trainers.

Playgroup sessions

Student run playgroup sessions with the guidance and support of the trainer/s. These playgroups are advertised to the local community for any families or childcare centres who wish to attend.

This format allows students to put the theory into practice. They are able do this multi times and get direct guidance from the trainer as required. Students get to see what others are doing and create an environment where the students collaborate and support each other’s ideas and successes.

This also gives students the opportunity to practice any assessment tasks to ensure they are ready for the assessment. The trainer has opportunities to informally observe individual students. Then they can adjust the students training experience to support their individual learning needs.

No tasks during the playgroup sessions will be formally assessed but it will support students’ hand on learning. This assessment free environment is created to have a safe space for students to explore freely.

Childcare centres could also potentially get to meet some of the students if they attend a few of the playgroup sessions. This would allow for both parties to start building rapport before they potentially do a placement at their centre. Considering students may gain employment after the placement. Both the employee, student and trainer can observe and see which workplace, individual students might best fit. As well as allowing the trainer to tailor some of the training to meet any individual needs of the centres.

8-12 every Wednesday OR Friday

Students only attend one session each week. The other day they will be required to attend work placement.

Work placement

Is a compulsory part of the qualification CHC50121 – Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care.

Requirement: 280 hours

It aims to provide:

  • Hands on experience
  • Knowledge of employers’ expectations
  • Opportunity to gain confidence and better communication skills
  • Establishing contacts for future job prospects
  • Improved employment outcomes

The student will be provided with an online work placement booklet. This is designed to help students get the most out of their work placement. The work placement gives opportunities to put the skills and knowledge developed through your learning into practice in a real workplace.

The work placement is a collaborative effort between trainers and students, with students responsible for ensuring completion and meeting required hours. Placement location proximity cannot be guaranteed, and students must arrange their own transportation.

Flexibility in placement timing can be negotiated via individual training plans to meet qualification requirements. Typically, students attend one day a week during Terms 2 and 3, followed by a 4-6 week block placement in Term 4

Monitoring and reporting arrangements during work placement

Trainers will check in with the student each week either through an online training session, a playgroup session or via email. This may increase depending on the students or work placement provider’s needs. As well as the trainers’ capacities at the time.

Trainers will book regular visits throughout the work placement and ensure they have time to meet with both the student and their work placement supervisors individually and as a group.

We believe regular direct communication during work placements is key for all parties to have a successful learning experience.

Self-directed Study

The learning guide contains the theory required for each unit. There are self-reflection questions, activities and further resources to be accessed. The use of this resource is self-directed. The trainer will give some suggestions on where the student should be up to during the course of the unit.

Trainers will provide updates on where students should be up to in each relevant online class. This is to support students to be successful in their self-directed study.

Mode 2: Traineeships + School-based Traineeship

Traineeships

Provide the apprentice/trainee with a means of gaining a nationally recognised qualification whilst being employed (and paid) to undertake tasks in a workplace that can provide the required levels of on‐the‐job training and instruction, supervision, support, encouragement, relevant resources and sufficient opportunities for skill development.

School-based Traineeship

An Australian School-based Apprenticeship (ASbA) is an Australian Apprenticeship undertaken part time while the student is still at school. An Australian School-based Apprenticeship provides hands-on industry experience and the ability to work towards or complete a nationally recognised qualification while undertaking your secondary school certificate.

Please note that the Traineeship modes still require students to complete the online training requirements through webinars and self-directed study but this mode allows for a more flexible time frame for students to complete their studies.

Each traineeship plan is developed around the individual student and their workplace. A traineeship plan outlines the requirements from all parties involved and a tailored schedule to ensure the student meets all the requirements to gain the qualification.

Assessment Methods

All assessment requirements for individual units within Training product are detailed in the Unit Information Pack which it’s provided to students at the commencement of their course.

This includes any resources that may be required.

Method 1: Unit Knowledge Test (UKT)

This is a number of written questions for students to complete and submit to assessors.

Method 2: Workplace Tasks

The completion of the Work Placement booklet which is an online portfolio of learning activities and a variety of supporting evidence.

Method 3: Workplace Observation

The student is required to be directly observed while undertaking the tasks outlined during work placement.

The trainer and assessor will be observing the student to complete the tasks and may take notes, photos and video if required. The trainer and assessor may stop student to ask some questions related to the tasks being performed.

The trainer will review the work placement booklet, the supporting evidence and directly observe the student completing tasks required for assessment.

Work Placement

Learners are required to have completed a total of at least 280 hours of work placement in a regulated children’s education and care service in Australia as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency. The total number of hours may be applied collectively across all units of competency that include the requirement for workplace hours.

This equals to a minimum of 38 days full day of 7.5hr per day.

Individual Learners can discuss with the trainer and the workplace if they have other commitments, they are needing to work their work placement around. The trainer will need to consider their commitment to all students to ensure no one is disadvantaged. All parties need to agree to the date and times ahead of time and have this confirm on the students

Self-directed Study

During the school term, students are expected to commit at least 12 hrs a week for their self-study. This leaves the school holiday periods as extra time that students would be able to complete outstanding assessment and training tasks.

The Assessment Tasks are additional hours on top of the self-directed study and are not included in the total amount of training hours.

  • All students will be provided with training resources and assessment materials for all units of competency and additional training documents as required.

Transport to all training venues

Playgroup – at the Howrah Community Centre. Playgroup will go on excursions to other sites but all parties will be given at least 2 weeks’ notice to prepare any required transport.

Work placement – This is individual and each student is to be advised as soon as possible of potential options for work placement. The student is required to organise their own transport to the work placement venue.

Dress and personal equipment requirements

Clean, tidy and professional attire.
A Uniform top is provided to wear for playgroup and work placement sessions. Enclosed shoes and a sun safe hat.
